Abstract

Deficits in phonological awareness have been widely associated with dyslexia, but there is controversy in research about whether dyscalculia can be related to phonological deficits and whether performance on phonological awareness tasks differs from specific learning disabilities (SLDs) in reading. This cross-sectional, nonexperimental, and descriptive study aims to compare the development of phonological awareness in second grade children diagnosed with TA in reading versus TA in math. The results indicate that there are no significant differences in phonological performance between children with dyslexia and those with dyscalculia, and that in both cases they have higher percentages of deficits in syllabic and phonemic awareness. The absence of differences in phonological performance supports the hypotheses of a common cognitive deficit and suggests that the difficulties found in both groups could be explained by common deficits in phonological awareness.
