Narrative Catechesis: Jesus's Perspicacy in the Pericope of the Good Samaritan

Abstract
This article examines the pericope of the Good Samaritan (Lk 10:25-37) through the lens of narrative catechesis, arguing that Jesus’ parables are not mere didactic illustrations but dialogical mechanisms whose internal logic challenges the listener and leads to metanoia, or conversion. Grounded in the premise that biblical revelation is historical and communicated through theological narratives, it analyzes how Jesus employs irony, humor, and perspicacity to reverse roles with the teacher of the Law and dismantle his initial question. By transforming the scholastic debate from “who is my neighbor?” to “who acted as a neighbor?”, Jesus shifts the focus from a juridical category to an ethics of active proximity: the neighbor ceases to be an external object of definition and becomes an internalized calling, turning into a verb and a way of life. The unexpected appearance of the Samaritan shatters Jewish expectations and underscores the primacy of mercy over ritual. The study concludes that recovering these narrative keys fosters a biblical reading that prioritizes transformative encounter and practical conversion over abstract moralization.
