Abstract

Religious Education (RE) in Brazil has historically been marked by tensions between the secular nature of the state and religious denominationalism, making it a field of normative, epistemological, and pedagogical disputes. This article analyzes the paradigm shift proposed by Wolfgang Gruen in Minas Gerais in the 1970s and examines how his epistemological foundations were incorporated into the Minas Gerais Reference Curriculum (CRMG), contributing to the overcoming of the confessional model of RE. The research adopts a bibliographic and documentary approach, based on Gruen’s intellectual output, national normative frameworks regulating RE, and the CRMG. The selection of works considered two criteria: thematic centrality in the debate on the foundations of RE and historical relevance in the process of transforming the RE component in Brazil, beginning in the 1970s. The analysis indicates that one of Gruen’s contributions was to distinguish RE from catechesis. Inspired by Paul Tillich, Gruen understood religiosity as an anthropological category, associated with the human search for meaning in existence, proposing it as the object of study for RE. This perspective broadened the scope of RE to include all students, including those without religious affiliation, and provided the basis for the formulation of the so-called “language from the outside,” considered appropriate for the pluralistic school environment.
